Kepa Arrizabalaga played his second game in Spain’s Euro 2020 qualification campaign and helped his nation make it three wins from their three games so far.
The result was a 4-1 win away against the Faroe Islands with Sergio Ramos, who set a new record for number of victories in international football with his 122nd, opening the scoring early on and Jesus Navas making it 2-0.
The Faroes did pull a goal back with a header from a corner but an own-goal off their goalkeeper restored the two-goal advantage for the Spaniards. Kepa was called upon to make a smart save on the artificial surface in the second half before Valencia’s Jose Luis Gaya completed the scoring.
Spain lead their group by two points from Sweden whom they host on Monday.
There was a less successful night for Andreas Christensen and Denmark who were held 1-1 at home by Republic of Ireland in another Euro qualifier. It took until the 76rd minute for the deadlock to be broken, Southampton’s Pierre Emile Hojbjerg heading in for the Danes, but a late header at the other end by Shane Duffy denied them their first win in the group. Ireland lead with seven points having played a game more than fourth-place Denmark who have two points.
Their game on Monday is against Georgia, one point, one place and one game ahead.
Meanwhile, Willian has been called up by Brazil to replace Neymar in their squad for the Copa America later this month. The PSG player suffered an ankle injury in a warm-up game on Wednesday.
Brazil, who are the host nation, begin their Copa America on Saturday June 15 with a game against Bolivia.
