The USA begin their campaign against Guyana, managed by former Birmingham and Derby defender Michael Johnson. The game gets underway at 3am UK time on Wednesday morning.

What is the Gold Cup?

The Gold Cup is a tournament that is held every two years for footballing nations from North America, central America and the Caribbean. This is the 15th edition of the tournament and it got underway over the weekend.

Where is the tournament being held?

It’s being split across three countries this year, with America, Costa Rica and Jamaica all hosting games. Predominately the games are being played in the USA, however.

How do teams qualify?

The six teams who were in the 2018 World Cup hexagonal automatically qualified, and the remainders are the best 10 teams from the CONCACAF Nations League qualification process. The tournament is structured into four groups of four, and the top two from each group move on to the quarter-finals.

Who are the favourites?

You have to say that USA were probably seen as the favourites heading into the tournament, along with Mexico. The Americans are the defending champions and are searching for their seventh Gold Cup title, although they will need to shake off some indifferent pre-tournament form if they are to retain their title. Mexico, who won their opening game 7-0, and Costa Rica appear to be the strongest challengers.

What Chelsea players are in action?

As mentioned at the top of this article, Pulisic and Miazga will be looking to feature for USA, as the States get their campaign underway against Guyana. Michael Hector is another Blue at the tournament, with the defender part of the Jamaica squad.

The final of the Gold Cup will be played on 7 July.
