Cech was a Blue for 11 years from 2004 to 2015 before signing for Arsenal where he spent four seasons until retiring as a player after the Europa League final in May.

Having played for Viktoria Plzen, Chmel Bisany and Sparta Prague in his native Czech Republic, he moved to Rennes in France. After two seasons there he switched to Stamford Bridge.

It was the first game of the 2004/05 Premier League season, against Manchester United at home. Chelsea won 1-0 and went on to win the league title that season.

During that season he played 1024 minutes in the league without conceding a goal, an English top-flight record at the time.

He did so when he reached 209 clean sheets against Hull away on 11 January 2014. The Blues won 2-0.

He played 124 matches for Czech Republic which is a national record. He kept 53 clean sheets. Ninety-one of the caps and 42 of the clean sheets were as a Chelsea player.

Why did Cech wear a helmet/head guard when playing?

Cech suffered a fractured skull when in a collision with Reading’s Stephen Hunt in an away game in October 2006. Although he made a remarkably rapid recovery and was playing again the following January, on medical advice he wore head protection for the rest of his career.
