Jody Morris says returning to Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard’s assistant feels like he has ‘come home’.

Our former midfielder has followed Lampard from Derby to Chelsea to take up the role of assistant head coach, having previously enjoyed five hugely successful years working in our Academy.

Despite an enjoyable year at Pride Park with Derby, where the Rams came within 90 minutes of earning promotion to the Premier League, Morris had no doubt in his mind where he wanted to work if the opportunity arose.

‘It’s an amazing feeling to be back,’ said Jody.

‘This is my club, it’s the team I supported as a boy and I was lucky enough to go through the ranks as an eight-year-old to then play for Chelsea.

‘Obviously the five years I had working in the Academy were amazing but after leaving for Derby last year, to come back now really does feel like I’ve come home.

Morris also explained his close working and personal relationship with Lampard, which dates back to their playing days as team-mates at Stamford Bridge, and praised our new head coach's ability to unite people together behind a common cause.

‘When Lamps, or the gaffer as I should say, signed for Chelsea originally we became really good mates,' he said. 'I roomed with him on his first pre-season trip and we’ve remained close ever since.

‘We always spoke about working together if he went into management and we really enjoyed last season at Derby. Now we are here at Chelsea and it feels amazing.

‘I’ve seen first-hand how Frank can galvanise a place, he brought the fans and the club together at Derby, and the way the place was united throughout the club was largely down to how Frank went about his way as a manager.

‘It was a joy to watch and I’m looking forward to working with the players we have here at Chelsea, some really talented guys and a lot of exciting young players too. It feels amazing to be back here now.’

The Blues are back in pre-season action this afternoon (Saturday) when they take on St Patrick's Athletic in Dublin. The match can be watched via a live stream on this website or on our 5th Stand app. Click here for full details and to sign up to watch.
