With the excitement already building over Chelsea Women’s first Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur taking place at Stamford Bridge, we continue to look forward to the event by recalling our previous five first-day-of-the-season outings…

All the free allocation of tickets for the forthcoming game against Spurs have sold out but a waiting list is now open…Looking back, the Blues go into this match with a good track record in our opening fixtures having won four and drawn one of the last five such games. We scored 14 goals and only conceded three.

In April 2014, Chelsea kicked off the campaign by travelling to the West Country to face Bristol City. The Blues came away with a 2-0 victory when former Blues Japanese striker Yuki Ogimi (pcitured) scored a brace within the first half. Our current Players’ Player of the Year Sophie Ingle was a part of the opponents’ line-up, while Hannah Blundell and Ji So-Yun featured in the victory.

We began our 2015/16 season, and the end of which we became champions of the FA Women’s Super League for the first time, with a 2-1 away win against Notts County Ladies – a club that has since sadly folded. Former Chelsea player Gemma Davison found the net twice, with one of the goals from the penalty spot in the later stages of the game. Ji, Blundell and Bright started in this game, and Carly Telford was the Magpies’ goalkeeper at the time.

Our 2016/17 campaign began up North when we faced Beth England and Millie Bright’s previous club, Doncaster Rovers Belles. Karen Carney opened the scoring after 12 minutes through a spot-kick. The Belles levelled the scoring four minutes later through a Claire Rafferty own-goal; however, England restored our lead after 23 minutes. Katie Chapman netted on the stroke of half-time, and Eniola Aluko put the icing on the cake when firing home with five minutes left on the clock to secure three well-deserved points in an enthralling 4-1 triumph.

We won the WSL title for a second time in 2017/18 after being unbeaten all season, and we began our successful campaign at Kingsmeadow, the new home of Chelsea Women, against Bristol. Five different players contributed to the commanding 6-0 victory. Drew Spence and Fran Kirby found the target in the first half, while Magdalena Eriksson and Gilly Flaherty scored one apiece in the second half and Maren Mjelde a brace.

Last season we began our defence of the WSL title with a goalless draw against Manchester City. Neither side could find a way through due to both defences being largely on top, which resulted in sharing the points.
