Former Chelsea Women goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl has today announced she has joined German team VfL Wolfsburg.

Lindahl departed from the club before the Women’s World Cup this summer after having spent four-and-a-half successful years with the Blues.

The 36-year-old was a key member within Emma Hayes’ squad over the years. Her time at Chelsea was trophy-laden having won the FA Women’s Super League and the Women’s FA Cup in 2015 and 2018, plus the 2017 Spring Series.

The experienced goalkeeper made 77 appearances for the Blues in total and in that time earned a spot in the 2016 WSL1 Team of the Year and was nominated for PFA Women’s Player of the Year.

The Swedish international, who has amassed over 155 caps, recently played in her fourth World Cup finals and reached the semi-final of the tournament. Sweden received the bronze medal after beating England 2-1 in the third-place play-off.

Chelsea have come up against the Frauen-Bundesliga side in the Women’s Champions League on three occasions. We first met them in 2015/16 at the round of 16 stage whereby they narrowly beat us 2-1 and 2-0. In the following season, Wolfsburg knocked us out of the competition in the first round as we lost 3-0 in the first leg and then 1-1 in the return fixture. Our most recent encounter came in the 2017/18 semi-final of the European competition and they progressed to the final after winning 3-1 and 2-0.
