When asked why we beat Barcelona, David Luiz and Pedro picked out the same word: intensity.

It has been a key aspect of Frank Lampard’s training methods since his arrival earlier in July. The boss has demanded his players move the ball quickly and purposefully, and the benefits of that approach were seen in Tuesday’s victory over the Spanish champions in Saitama.

‘Both teams played very well,’ assessed David Luiz.

‘I was happy with my team because we played with intensity, and with a lot of possession also. Against Barcelona it’s always difficult to keep possession but we did it, and we could have scored more goals.

‘It is a great moment of pre-season. We are still improving, we are still going in the right way, and these two games [in Japan] gave us a lot of things that will help us.’

For Pedro it was success against the club he called home for so many years, and whose line-up included a number of his former team-mates. The winger has looked as lively as ever during pre-season and he is already looking forward to the start of competitive action next month.

‘It’s a good win that gives us confidence,’ Pedro said. ‘The first game is a massive one, a difficult one against United, but now it’s time to prepare with these pre-season games.

‘It’s a great opportunity for us to show our potential and keep working with vision and with high intensity.’

The final word went to David Luiz, who reflected on his trip to this part of the Far East where he proved a huge hit with the locals.

‘We love to be here. it’s a great country, full of people with a lot of respect and a lot of passion for football. For me it’s always special to be here, and I just try to enjoy it and give back what they deserve: respect and good football.’
