Cesar Azpilicueta explained what Chelsea needed to do better in our draw with Leicester yesterday, while N’Golo Kante identified a reason why our performance levels faded as the game wore on.

The Blues were quick out of the blocks in Frank Lampard’s first lhome game and thoroughly deserved the lead given to us by Mason Mount’s maiden Chelsea strike six minutes in. We had opportunities to extend that advantage but couldn’t do so during our brightest period of the encounter, and Azpilicueta knows we must be more clinical in the months ahead.

‘When you have better spells than the opponent you have to kill the game,’ the skipper said.

‘In the first 20, 25 minutes we were a lot better than them, we were controlling the game and having a lot of chances. We needed to score a second goal.

‘The Premier League is very tough, and Leicester are a good team with good players and good quality. We knew they could create us problems and when you are 1-0 up you are risk.’

Kante was also frustrated we couldn’t capitalise on our early dominance further, and the midfielder identified a potential reason why the Foxes were able to get back into the game as it went on.

‘It’s true we used a long of energy this week,’ Kante pointed out.

‘We had the match against Man U and then travelled to Turkey for the match against Liverpool when we played very well. We were a bit tired against a good Leicester team. We had a good first 20 minutes. After Leicester were very good in the match and in the end a draw is not a bad result.’

Our quest for a first win of the campaign will continue at Carrow Road on Saturday, and Azpilicueta is aware just how significant the fixture against Norwich is.

‘The season is long. We would like to have started in another way with different results, but the performances have been good and now it’s time to get results.

‘We are Chelsea and we don’t accept not winning. It’s up to us to raise the levels and get a win next Saturday.’
