Abraham backed up his brace at Norwich with two predatory finishes in the first half against Sheffield United, and his all-round game throughout caught the eye, especially as he was coming up against three centre-backs.

They were his first Stamford Bridge goals but the afternoon ended sourly when the Blades equalised with time almost up, meaning Abraham could not take full satisfaction from what would have been another day to remember for him.

‘We are all disappointed with this draw,’ he said.

‘We’re Chelsea and no team should be able to come here and play better than us, and Sheffield United were better than us in the second half. It wasn’t good enough from all of us. I take responsibility as well being one of the players out there.

‘We were gifted two goals in the first half and from there we should have killed the game off, come out in the second half and upset the opposition. We know Sheffield United will always fight till the end.

‘We should have frustrated them, but them scoring an early goal in the second half didn’t help. From there we had to relax, calm everything down, and go out there and win the game.

‘It just wasn’t our day,’ added Abraham. ‘We have to go on the international break now and calm back down with all our heads focused and screwed on. We need to get these wins.’

Abraham acknowledged scoring his first Stamford Bridge goals was ‘an achievement for me, but if would have been better if we had all three points’. He also said he should have completed his treble in the second half, although credit must go to Dean Henderson for a fine save.

With not long left, Abraham was replaced to a standing ovation from all corners of Stamford Bridge, well-deserved acclaim after an individual showing Frank Lampard identified as clearly being our best of the day.

‘I just looked around the stadium and said ‘wow’. I couldn’t believe it. Chelsea fans are amazing. They have always supported me. From a young kid growing up they have always pushed me to get into the first team, and now I am here they have backed me ever since.

‘Hopefully now we can start getting some wins for them.’
