Conor Gallagher wins EFL Young Player of the Month award

Conor Gallagher’s excellent start to life in senior football has been rewarded with the EFL Young Player of the Month award for August.

The 19-year-old made the switch on loan to Charlton Athletic in the summer and has been influential under Lee Bowyer as the Addicks won four of their opening six Championship matches in August. They currently sit third in the table.

Gallagher, a central midfielder who has been deployed in a box-to-box role at the Valley, has scored three goals so far, including the winner against Brentford. He represented England at Under-20 level in the most recent round of internationals.

‘I’m buzzing to receive this award,’ Gallagher told the official Charlton website. ‘It’s been a great first month for me at Charlton and I couldn’t have asked for more really. We’re third in the table and I’ve scored a few goals so we’re just looking to carry on the form that we’re in.

‘I was a little nervous at the start but after the first game, I grew in confidence. A goal in my first senior start was unreal, definitely the best feeling I’ve had so far in my career, in front of the fans too.

‘I wasn’t expecting to be doing so well. At the start, my main aim was to get into the team but I’m playing well so I’ve stayed in the starting 11 and hopefully I can carry on this form. The Championship is obviously different to development football but I expected it and felt I was ready to step up. I think I’ve shown that I’m ready to play at this level.’

Charlton travel to Wigan tomorrow looking to continue their fine start to the campaign. There will a round-up of how all our on-loan players get on this weekend in our weekly Chelsea Here Chelsea There feature on Monday.
