The Reds arrive at Stamford Bridge as the Premier League’s form team after reeling off five consecutive victories to start the season, and stretching their winning run to 14 games and their unbeaten streak to 22 games.

However, the Blues have shown scant regard for such runs of success in the past, ending Arsenal’s hopes for an unbeaten season in 1990/91 when we beat them 2-1 in their 24th game and halting Manchester United’s 29-match unbeaten run in 1999/2000 with a 5-0 thumping of the Red Devils.

Here are six more recent occasions when we have left our opponents’ successful streaks in tatters...

Barcelona – April 2012

Barcelona were favourites to retain the Champions League title in 2012 when they arrived at Stamford Bridge for the semi-finals on a 16-match unbeaten run in the competition. However, the Blues took the lead through Didier Drogba just before half-time and held out against intense pressure to win 1-0 in the first leg before a 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou a fortnight later sent us through to the final.

Manchester City – February 2014

Manchester City’s home form in 2013/14 was ominous as they won their first 11 games at the Eithad Stadium, scoring 42 goals in the process. However, the Blues produced an excellent counter-attacking display with Branislav Ivanovic scoring the only goal after 32 minutes and our defence frustrating City as they failed to score in a home league game for the first time in three years.

Liverpool – April 2014

Liverpool were on the verge of their first league title for 24 years after winning 11 straight matches during a 16-game unbeaten run which dated back to a 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge the previous December. However, the Blues beat the Reds again at Anfield with Demba Ba opening the scoring after an infamous miscontol then slip by Steven Gerrard and Willian adding a second in stoppage time as we inflicted a damaging 2-0 defeat which allowed Man City to pip the Merseysiders to the title.

Tottenham Hotspur – November 2016

Chelsea had ended Tottenham’s hopes of winning the Premier League six months earlier by coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 and we inflicted more pain on our London rivals on their next visit to the Bridge. Spurs were the only unbeaten team in the league after 12 games and took the lead through Christian Eriksen early on. However, a stunner by Pedro levelled the score just before half-time and Victor Moses fired home early in the second half to seal a 2-1 win.

Manchester City – December 2018

After winning the Premier League in 2017/18, Manchester City made a strong start the following season which raised questions over whether they could go undefeated throughout the entire campaign. However, their 21-game unbeaten run in the league finally came to an end at Stamford Bridge in December as goals by N’Golo Kante and David Luiz condemned them to a 2-0 defeat

Wolverhampton Wanderers – September 2019

You only have to go back a week to find the most recent example of Chelsea’s streak-ending powers. Wolves were celebrating the 130th anniversary of their first game at Molineux but the Blues spoiled the party by handing them their first home defeat in 16 matches with Tammy Abraham bagging a hat-trick and Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount adding a goal each in our 5-2 victory.
