You have to go back all the way to the inaugural tournament in 1960/61 to find the last time the Blues netted seven goals in a League Cup game.

In fact, we did it twice in our first three matches as we won 7-1 at fourth division Millwall in the opening round and 7-0 at another fourth-level side, Doncaster Rovers, in the third round.

While it took nearly six decades for the Blues to hit that mark again in England’s second cup competition, you only have to go back seven years to December 2012 to find the last time we scored seven or more in a league game.

Less than a week after appearing in the FIFA Club World Cup final in Japan, the Blues showed no signs of travel fatigue by serving up a pre-Christmas treat to the fans at Stamford Bridge with an 8-0 thumping of Aston Villa.

Daniel Sturridge and Lampard both scored twice, Kalou and Anelka each contributed a goal and Carlos Edwards put the ball into his own net on a miserable day for the Tractor Boys in west London.

While Chelsea have yet to score seven goals in a Champions League or Europa League match, we did manage to reach the mark during our victorious Cup Winners’ Cup campaign in 1997/98.

Norwegian side Tromso had beaten the Blues 3-2 on a snowbound pitch in the Arctic Circle in the first leg of our second-round tie.

However, it was a very different story when the second leg took place in more benign conditions in London as a hat-trick by Gianluca Vialli, two goals by Dan Petrescu and one each by Gianfranco Zola and Frank Leboeuf secured a 7-1 victory and a 9-4 aggregate triumph.
