Maurizio Sarri discusses our mentality in win over Newcastle and Willian's importance

Maurizio Sarri was pleased to see his side return to winning ways as we overcame Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, and the Italian spoke about ways in which his team can improve, as well as the future of Willian, who scored the decisive goal this evening.

The Blues took an early lead through Pedro, before Newcastle hit back shortly before the break.

Willian’s winner, a superb finish, arrived just before the hour and we saw the game out to move six points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal.

Sarri provided his thoughts on the performance

‘I’m really very happy with the result,’ he said. ‘I was happy with the performance at Tottenham, today we started well for 10 minutes but after the goal we thought it was easy and it wasn’t. We slept for 25 minutes and we were in trouble.

‘It was better in the second half but we need to improve in the mental reaction because after the first goal something happened. We stopped playing. It was very important to get three points, and to score, and for now that’s enough.’

Sarri was asked why he felt his team stopped playing after taking the lead

‘It’s very difficult to understand. In the last five matches it was difficult to score, today we did after eight or nine minutes so I think the team felt it was easy. We stopped playing and then of course we had problems. We were not able to react in the right way to the difficulties but today there were no difficulties as we scored after nine minutes.

‘For the first time, at Watford we reacted well to their goal in the last minutes of the first half. We reacted very well at Tottenham. Today we only had to manage a positive situation, not a difficulty. I think we need to improve our mentality.’

Willian was the match-winner, and Sarri spoke about the Brazilian’s importance to the side

‘Willian, for us, is a very important player. As I said yesterday in the press conference, in my opinion he has to stay with us. He’s very important player, like Pedro. Hudson-Odoi is becoming a very important player so with Eden like a striker today, we need wingers, so we need Pedro, Hudson-Odoi and Willian, of course. At this moment he’s a fundamental player.’

With Cesc Fabregas having left the club yesterday, Sarri hopes we will be able to bring in a replacement for the midfielder

‘As you have seen today, Jorginho was in trouble and on the bench there wasn’t a player for that position, so I need a player for that position, I need another option for Jorginho.

‘The club knows very well my opinion. I need a player there so it depends on the club’s decision, I can’t do anything more.’
