PMB: Chelsea v Newcastle - history

With the help of club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton, we recall some of our past meetings with the team from Tyneside...

We Have History

This meeting of two of the country's best-supported clubs has been a fixture since September 1907, when Jimmy Windridge and Billy Bridgeman earned the first points for the freshly promoted Pensioners. Goalie Jack Whitley kept a clean sheet – another top-flight first for David Calderhead’s team – on his debut.

In the early Eighties the clubs were Division Two promotion rivals, and the Blues’ regular defeats on Tyneside were avenged with some relish at Stamford Bridge. The Geordies lost 4-0 twice as well as 6-0 in October 1980, thanks to a Colin Lee hat-trick.

Since the advent of the Premier League, Chelsea have won 16 of these match and six have been drawn. Steve McClaren was in charge of Magpies when the reigning league champions dealt out a 5-1 hammering on the same Saturday evening time slot in February 2016. Pedro starred with a scamperingly decisive display, his best moment being an interception and decisive finish. Relive the action here.

Last season, Dwight Gayle scored an early opener for the visitors after a Marcos Alonso slip, but the day ended as one to forget for Magpies defender Matt Ritchie. After Eden Hazard thumped an equaliser, the converted winger was at fault before Alvaro Morata scored, and then conceded a penalty converted by Hazard. It concluded a 3-1 victory. Take another look at the highlights.

BLUE NOTES

Former FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah, making his debut for the Blues as substitute for Gus Poyet, scored a late goal that beat Tottenham Hotspur and sent Stamford Bridge delirious on 12 January 2000.

The Magpies’ have managed only three wins in 51 league visits to the Fulham Road over 65 years. The most recent came in May 2012 when a Papiss Cisse brace without reply secured the points. That is their only success in the Premier League era.
