With the help of club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton, we recall some of the past meetings with our red-and-white-shirted London rivals...
We Have History
Chelsea are playing Arsenal for the 197th occasion in all competitions, more than we have played against any other club. It is the top-flight’s most ancient all-London encounter, a fixture since 1907/08.
On a stormy early January day, last season’s end-to-end encounter finished 2-2. Chances at either end had been missed before first blood was drawn by Jack Wilshere, latching onto a deflected pass that fell kindly. Eden Hazard levelled from the spot after Hector Bellerin fouled him, before Marcos Alonso put the Blues ahead with a deft close-range conversion. After Bellerin drove in a stoppage-time equaliser from distance, Davide Zappacosta hit the bar just seconds before the final whistle.
West London’s most recent success in this match came in January 2016, early in Guus Hiddink’s second spell at the helm. The outcome was settled midway through the first half when Diego Costa pounced to beat Petr Cech – the striker's fifth goal in as many league appearances having netted three in his previous 14.
The result meant we were unbeaten against the Gunners in nine league meetings since October 2011, and was the Blues’ sixth victory in the time. The two clubs were level on 400 points from London derbies in the Premier League era at the time. Chelsea have since taken a 407-404 point lead.

Samuel Eto’o completed a 33-minute hat-trick in the Blues’ 3-1 defeat of visitors Manchester United on 19 January 2014, delivering Jose Mourinho’s 100th Premier League victory.
In the pulsating first half of the reverse fixture against Arsenal on 18 August, Pedro and Alvaro Morata put Chelsea two goals ahead inside 20 minutes before Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi levelled things up. Marcos Alonso scored the winner with nine minutes remaining.
