There has been cup and league action for players out on loan, and a return to playing in Spain. We have the highlights here…
There were several Blues loanees in FA Cup action at the weekend. Jay Dasilva (pictured above) started as Bristol City progressed to the fourth round thanks to a 1-0 win against Huddersfield, with Tomas Kalas coming off the bench to shore things up at the back against the Premier League side. Kurt Zouma was part of Everton’s rearguard as they overcame a valiant effort from Lincoln City to beat the Imps 2-1.
Derby County will get another shot at progressing past Southampton after they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Southampton at Pride Park, with Fikayo Tomori playing at the back for the Rams. Michael Hector was in action for Sheffield Wednesday who were held to a goalless draw by Luton at Hillsborough and Kenedy started for Newcastle, who will have to travel to Ewood Park for a replay after a 1-1 draw with Blackburn.
Lewis Baker started for Leeds who were beaten 2-1 by QPR, Todd Kane started for Hull in a 2-1 defeat at Millwall and Reece James came on for Wigan who lost 1-0 at West Brom.
In the Championship on New Year’s Day, Tammy Abraham scored both of Aston Villa’s goals in a 2-2 draw with QPR to take his tally for the season to 16 from 21 appearances. Kalas was part of an impressive defensive display for Bristol City who won 2-0 at Stoke.
Tomori and Mason Mount both played the full match for Derby who drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough, while Hector was in Sheffield Wednesday’s rearguard as they drew by the same scoreline against Birmingham. Trevoh Chalobah started in Ipswich’s 3-2 defeat against Millwall and Reece James could not prevent Wigan from slipping to a 3-0 loss against Sheffield United.
In the Premier League’s opening fixtures of 2019, Zouma was in Everton’s defence when they were beaten 1-0 by Leicester and Kenedy came on as a second-half substitute for Newcastle in a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United.
In La Liga, Michy Bayshuayi came off the bench for Valencia who lost 2-1 at Alaves and Kenneth Omeruo started for Leganes in a 1-0 defeat at Espanyol
Bradley Collins kept two clean sheets for Burton Albion in League One, firstly in a goalless draw at Bristol Rovers. Then, after extending his loan until the end of the season and ahead of a huge fixture against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Wednesday night, he played in a 4-0 win at Rochdale. Dujon Sterling helped Coventry pick up three points last week thanks to a 2-0 victory at Wycombe. He was also in league action for the Sky Blues at the weekend. They were beaten 2-1 at Scunthorpe.
In League Two, Jacob Maddox set up Cheltenham’s opener in a 4-1 win against a Yeovil side which did not contain Nathan Baxter between the sticks, although he was back in goal for the Glovers’ in their 1-0 defeat against Bury.
