Willian describes big Champions League confidence boost ahead of top-two clashes

Next up for Chelsea in the Champions League will be our back-to-back games against group leaders Ajax who have made an impressive start to this season’s competition.

However Willian, who smashed in a second-half winner in Wednesday night’s game in Lille, believes the way we performed in France has set us up well to give last year’s semi-finalists a strong challenge.

Ajax have six points from six so far and scored three goals without reply against both Lille and Valencia. Chelsea now sit second with our three points and after we have played Southampton in the Premier League and Newcastle after the international break, we travel to Amsterdam.

‘For sure it will be a tough game and we need to prepare well for this game,’ acknowledged Willian who was one our most experienced players on the pitch in Lille and was making his 300th appearance for the club.

‘We know how difficult it is going to be but I think we can do the same job as we did on Wednesday night. We have to work together like we are doing and then results are going to come like this one.

‘We deserved to win and we needed to win. We have worked hard every day and the lads did an amazing job against Lille. It is a tough place to play, Lille have a good team, they play well so we did a great job and we have to carry on in the same way.’

Joining Willian on the scoresheet on Wednesday night was Tammy Abraham. It was the young striker’s first Champions League goal.

‘I am in a team that is creating a lot of chances and I knew I would get my chance and I think I took it well,’ he said, before explaining the team had found it straightforward to play in a different shape than in recent games, with three selected in central defence and wing-backs.

‘We work on it in training. The manager always wants to mix it up and we have the players for it. We have fantastic players and we can play any system and that is what we need to do throughout the season.’
