Green on Hudson-Odoi’s training ground impact

Speaking to BBC 5 Live Sport, Rob Green has described the surprise felt by himself and his Chelsea team-mates that Callum Hudson-Odoi wasn’t given the chance to play more regularly last season despite the youngster’s strong performances in training.

Having joined the club as third-choice goalkeeper, the former England international got the opportunity to watch Hudson-Odoi at close quarters at Cobham and was impressed by what he saw of the teenager.

‘We were in the dressing room last season and the players were saying “how is he not playing?”’ said the 38-year-old who retired during the summer.

‘He was going out in training and tearing some of the best defenders in the world apart. He would consistently be the best in training to the point where some of the best players in the world were standing there applauding what he was doing in training.

‘There’s no such things as nerves for him and he can do these things on the biggest stage in the world as well.’

Green expects more to come from the 18-year-old now he has recovered from the Achilles injury which ended his season in April.

‘He has got such a brilliant mind and he is so confident. When he goes out there, he will try things and he will try it on the biggest stage,’ he added.

‘He will do something and you will ask him: “When have you done that? Why did you do that?”

‘He would say “because I've never done it before and I thought I'd try it.”’

Abraham rises in power ranking

Tammy Abraham has jumped six places to second in the Daily Mail’s Premier League power ranking after his impressive display in the 4-1 win at Southampton last weekend.

With the Blues sweeping aside the Saints at the same time Manchester City were losing 2-0 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Abraham moved ahead of the City trio of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero, and just behind first-placed Sadio Mane of Liverpool in the ranking.

‘It has been the dream start to life this season for Abraham, who was recently rewarded with a senior England call-up after shining for Frank Lampard's young Chelsea side in the top-flight,’ said the paper in its form guide of the league’s hottest players.

‘The 22-year-old is joint top scorer in the Premier League with Aguero on a brilliant eight goals. If he continues to develop, he could become a mainstay at Chelsea for years to come.’

Nigeria eye Ugbo

Having appeared to miss out on convincing Tammy Abraham to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria, the Super Eagles have turned their attention to another young Chelsea forward, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the paper, Ike Ugbo is now on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation after a good start to the 21-year-old’s loan spell at Dutch side Roda JC.

‘Ugbo scored his fifth goal in just eight appearances, six of which have been starts, for the Dutch side at Telstar on Friday night and Nigeria had officials at the game to watch him having stepped up their interest,’ stated the report.

‘Striker Ugbo was born in Lewisham, south London and is eligible for Nigeria through his parents.

‘He has played for England at Under-17 and Under-20 level, helping the latter squad win the 2017 Toulon Tournament.’
