Two young Chelsea defenders who were named in the England Under-21 squad for two forthcoming international matches will not take part due to fitness concerns.
An injury means Reece James was not part of the group that flew to Slovenia today for a friendly fixture tomorrow while Trevoh Chalobah, who is currently on-loan at Championship side Huddersfield Town, has also withdrawn as a precaution.
Two other Chelsea players remain in the squad which as well as the game in Slovenia, will contest a European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Austria in Milton Keynes on Tuesday.
One of them is Callum Hudson-Odoi who has yet to feature for the Under-21s despite making his senior England debut earlier in the year. He was originally called up for Aidy Boothroyd's squad in March but injuries opened the door for promotion to the seniors and he made his full England bow against Czech Republic at Wembley. The winger has recently returned from an Achilles tendon injury sustained at the end of last season.
The other is our development squad captain Marc Guehi who received his first England U21 call-up during the opening international weekend of the season and appeared twice for the young Lions.
Chalobah also played his first two Under-21 games in those fixtures but for James, who was in the England Under-21 squad for the first time with the latest round of call-ups, his injury means he will have to wait longer for first England U21 cap. He has previously represented England Under-21.
England Under-21s have won their opening two qualifiers for the 2021 Euros. Their meeting with Austria in Milton Keynes will be screened live on BT Sport.
