It’s a real statement of intent by the 22-year-old who will be looking to emulate these other prolific Blues, who have also got off the mark quickly and continued to find the net on a regular basis throughout the season that followed.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

A joint-winner of the Premier League’s Golden Boot with Leeds United in 1998/99, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink spent one season at Atletico Madrid before he returned to England to join Chelsea in the summer of 2000.

He quickly got into his stride at Stamford Bridge, scoring 10 in his first 11 league games for the Blues including four in a 6-1 win over Coventry City. He went on to bag 23 goals to win his second Golden Boot.

He also got off to a hot start the following season with 10 goals in our first 10 games and he netted 23 in total once again although he missed out on another Golden Boot after finishing a single goal behind Thierry Henry.

Gianfranco Zola

Hasselbaink didn’t score as regularly in our early games in 2002/03 after undergoing surgery for a hamstring problem but Gianfranco Zola helped to make up for it with a strong start to his final season at the Bridge.

The Italian managed only three league goals the previous season but he rediscovered his scoring touch with eight in our first 10 games including a memorable brace at Ewood Park as we came from behind twice to beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2.

He rounded off his time as a Chelsea player by finishing as our leading scorer in the league with 14 goals as we secured fourth place and qualified for the Champions League.

Frank Lampard

There was little indication of how prolific a scorer Frank Lampard would become when he managed only five league goals in his first Chelsea season in 2001/02 and six the following year.

However, his output gradually picked up as he scored 10 in 2003/04 and 13 a year later including the brace at Bolton which secured our first league title for half a century.

It was just a taster for what was to come from our record goalscorer as he scored 10 in our first 11 games the following season when we took 31 of a possible 33 points to set us on course for a successful title defence.

Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba became the second Chelsea player after Hasselbaink to win the Golden Boot with goals in 2006/07 and he would repeat the feat in 2009/10 after he hit the ground running under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.

An opening brace in a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Hull City set the Ivorian on his way and he scored eight in our first 11 games to put us into a battle for the title with champions from the previous three seasons Manchester United.

He finished with 29 goals including a hat-trick against Wigan in a 8-0 victory on the final day which secured the Premier League title as we won the Double for the first time.

Diego Costa

Diego Costa became an instant favourite with Chelsea fans as he scored seven goals in his first four Premier League games, including two in our 6-3 win at Everton and a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Swansea.

While injuries and suspensions limited him to only 26 games that season, the Spain international striker still finished as our leading scorer with 20 goals as we were crowned champions for the first time in five seasons.

His league output dropped to 12 the following season but he was back in the groove in 2016/17, scoring nine in our first 10 games and finishing again with 20 league goals as we claimed another title.
