It was some way for the former Borussia Dortmund ace to announce himself as a goalscoring force – indeed, no other player has opened their account for the club with a hat-trick since the Premier League era began in 1992.

He is, however, far from alone in netting a treble for the Blues in that time. Pulisic’s effort is actually the 26th Premier League hat-trick to be scored by a Chelsea player, and the second this season after Tammy Abraham was on target at Wolves in September.

The list of different nationalities is exactly half the overall amount, though, and America is the newest addition since 2014. Back then, we had three countries added to the list, but more on that later.

To the surprise of no one, our first Premier League hat-trick scorer was English. Give yourself a pat on the back if you knew it was Gavin Peacock, who fired home three times in a 5-0 drubbing of Middlesbrough in 1996.

England also leads the way in terms of quantity, too, thanks in no small part to Frank Lampard. Our head coach scored three top-flight hat-tricks for the Blues during his 13-year playing career here, plus Abraham’s effort at Wolves takes the tally of English hat-tricks up to five.

Three other countries have provided multiple hat-trick scorers for the Blues. Italian duo Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola are on the list, as the former became our first four-goal scorer in the Premier League in a win over Barnsley and then Zola netted his maiden hat-trick as a professional footballer in a win over Derby.

The Ivory Coast has a pair of Champions League winners, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou. The former netted three, including the most recent ‘perfect’ hat-trick prior to Pulisic’s effort, which came in our Premier League-clinching win over Wigan in 2010. A fortnight earlier, Kalou had also netted three times in a 7-0 drubbing of Stoke City.

Three Spanish internationals make that country the next prolific in terms of how many hat-trick scorers they’ve provided for the Blues, plus you could also argue we could add Brazil to the list as Diego Costa was born there. He scored a hat-trick early on in his Blues career against Swansea City, sandwiched in between efforts from Fernando Torres, against QPR in 2012, and Alvaro Morata versus Stoke City in 2017.

Now we’re into the countries who have provided one hat-trick scorer apiece, starting with the Netherlands. That man, of course, was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who never did things by half. He scored four against Coventry City, a ‘perfect’ hat-trick against Spurs and then rounded it off with a treble on his 32nd birthday versus Wolves – the latter made all the more impressive by the fact he did it as a sub.

Eden Hazard also has multiple Premier League hat-tricks, bringing Belgium into the conversation thanks to his three-goal showings against Newcastle United and Cardiff City. They came in handsome wins four years apart.

Let’s not forget Norway and Tore Andre Flo’s hat-trick against Tottenham when we won 6-1 at the Lane, a match which elevated the lanky striker to cult-hero status among the Blues faithful. One of his team-mates at that time can also be added to the list, as Welshman Mark Hughes scored three times against our old rivals Leeds United in April 1996.

Nicolas Anelka is the only Frenchman included, thanks to the three goals he scored against Sunderland in November 2008 on his way to winning the Premier League Golden Boot that season. Eidur Gudjohnsen, meanwhile, scored his first hat-trick when we beat Blackburn in 2004, which means Iceland are also on the list.

We round things off with two players whose time at the Bridge was fleeting, but forever to be remembered thanks to famous hat-tricks they scored. Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon netted our first treble against Man United in 60 years when he ran riot at the Bridge in January 2014 and two months later German international Andre Schurrle scored all three just down the road from our west London home when we beat neighbours Fulham at Craven Cottage.
