As in the first, against Grimsby Town in the previous round of Carabao Cup, the 19-year-old impressed on a personal level but this time he was left to reflect on a defeat, albeit by the narrow margin of two goals to one and due to an outstanding free-kick strike by Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.The 7-1 win against Grimsby last month had begun the seven-game winning run which came to an end yesterday.‘The defeat is a tough one to take after such a good run of form,’ admitted Marc Guehi, ‘but the most important thing is to bounce back and recover and go again in the Premier League.‘We played well in spells of the game. At half-time the manager said to carry on what we were doing, keep moving the ball fast, but with a bit more intensity and a bit more zeal to our game.‘That is what we tried to do and we came out fast and we came out strong. Michy scored a fantastic goal for us but unfortunately we came away with a loss.’

Two years ago in a home league game against Man United, Rashford fired a late set-piece from a similar distance over the Shed End bar so Chelsea won 1-0. This time it went a few inches lower to highlight the small margins that can make a big difference.‘It was a fantastic free-kick, I have seen it back, and there is nothing we can really do and so it is credit to them,’ Guehi said of yesterday’s winner, before going on to talk about his own appearances in the team this season.‘It is a great opportunity. The manager has been giving young players a chance such as Fikayo, Tammy and Mason, and it really gives an incentive to us to go out there and try to prove a point. I was grateful for the opportunity again, and to go out and play against such a big club like Manchester United. Hopefully I can keep getting opportunities and keep showing everyone what I can do.’
