Overseas involvement

Mario Pasalic picked a good time to open his Champions League goalscoring account for Atalanta, when he emphatically headed home the Italian side’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City (pictured top). Although they couldn’t find a way past their Premier League opponents, who finished the game with Kyle Walker in goal following Claudio Bravo’s dismissal, it was at least a first point of the European campaign for Atalanta at the fourth attempt. There was less entertainment on Sunday when they drew 0-0 at Sampdoria, with Pasalic playing the full 90 minutes.

It was also goalless for Kenedy and Getafe in Spain’s La Liga where they were held by Espanyol. A few days earlier the Brazilian winger came off the bench in a 2-1 defeat to Basel in the Europa League and they now trail the Swiss side by four points at the top of Group C.

After not featuring for RB Leipzig in the early months of the season, Ethan Ampadu made his third appearance from the substitutes’ bench in the last four matches, coming on with his side 2-1 up at Hertha Berlin in a game they eventually won 4-2. The result spoiled the party somewhat, as the home side were marking the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The pre-match entertainment included knocking over a replica wall.

Elsewhere in Europe, Victor Moses helped Fenerbahce to a 3-2 home win over Kasimpasa and Danilo Pantic came on as a late sub in Mol Fehervar’s 2-0 win at Rakoczi in the Hungarian top flight. There was also action for two loanees in the Dutch second tier. Ike Ugbo ended a month-long goal drought by scoring against PSV Under-21s and Cambuur, although his Roda JC side only took a point from the two matches, and Juan Castillo provided an assist as Ajax Under-21s beat Den Bosch 5-1 after losing 3-1 to Volendam earlier in the week.

In England

Matt Miazga helped Reading continue their resurgence under new manager Mark Bowen as they recorded a 3-0 home win over a Luton Town side who managed only one shot on target without the injured Izzy Brown in the side.Also in the Championship, Trevoh Chalobah was back in the Huddersfield Town starting line-up but the Terriers were beaten 3-1 by Preston North End to suffer their first defeat under the management of Danny Cowley. They had gone into the side having collected 14 points since the start of October, which was more than any other Championship side, but they fell short against the league’s second-place side.

Jake Clarke-Salter made only his second Championship start of the season for Birmingham City and just as in the first, the Blues were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline. This time they were beaten by Fulham at St Andrew’s.There were also defeats for two other Blues loanees in the second tier. Dujon Sterling played 74 minutes of Wigan’s 3-0 home defeat against Brentford and Conor Gallagher could not help prevent Charlton Athletic to succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at Millwall courtesy of a stoppage-time winner in the south London derby.The first round proper of this season’s FA Cup took place this weekend and there was a hard-fought victory for Plymouth Argyle, whom Josh Grant helped to a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers, who play in the league above the League Two side. The Pilgrims will be keen observers when the draw for the second round takes place later today at 7pm (UK time).
