We travel to north London to take on a Spurs side managed by Mourinho, who enjoyed plenty of success during his two spells with Chelsea. In the build-up to that game, Lampard has revealed there is one thing in particular he picked up during their time working together at Stamford Bridge which has proved to be especially helpful on his own return to the Blues this season.

‘He was the first manager that day-to-day made me feel really close to him and worked on the mental side,’ explained our current head coach. ‘It was just this confidence that he gave me, which kind of formed a bond with me.

‘Working with the younger players here now, I think it’s my duty to kind of form that bond with them, because they’re at the start of their journey, their career and they need to look up to not just myself, but the staff, and know what it takes to get to where they want to be.

‘So, I try to form that bond with the players because I love all the young boys here, they’re good lads as well as really good players.’

While, it is an important lesson he learned, he also explained that it is not about employing any particular psychology, just making sure the manager and players have the right relationship to work together as a close group at Cobham.

‘It’s just a constant of how you are with them every day and how much you want to work with them at the training ground. How much you sometimes want to delve into their personal lives and have a word with them about it, make sure they’re okay. I think it’s all those things, where they feel comfortable in the way they interact with you. I think it is huge.’

Lampard was also pleased that one of those young Chelsea players who has impressed so much during the first half of this campaign, Fikayo Tomori, recently committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new five-year contract.

‘He’s been playing fantastically well since I had him at Derby and then this season he’s shown it in the Premier League and absolutely deserves his new contract,’ said Frank. ‘It’s great for the club that the young players we’ve got are one by one signing long-term deals, showing how much they want to play for the club.’
