Media Watch: Joe Cole and Michael Owen find Chelsea more attractive than London rivals, Malmo manager not too disappointed by Chelsea loss

In our look at the latest Chelsea-related news stories from the media, Joe Cole and Michael Owen explain why players would rather join Chelsea than other London clubs, Uwe Rosler assesses Malmo’s performance in their 2-1 loss to the Blues and pundit Paul Merson predicts the result of our FA Cup tie against Manchester United.

Cole and Owen on why players prefer Chelsea

Former Blues star Joe Cole and ex-England striker Michael Owen believe Chelsea is still a far more appealing proposition for potential signings than Arsenal.

The two ex-England international team-mates were pundits on BT Sport for Thursday’s Europa League matches and watched Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Bate Borisov in Belarus and our 2-1 win in Sweden against Malmo.

When asked which of the two clubs had more to offer to players, both were in agreement.

'Which team do you look at and go, wow what player, good team? Everyone says Chelsea are under a big cloud, but I’d prefer Chelsea every day of the week over Arsenal, said Owen, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Added Cole: 'With Arsenal, they’re probably not going to win anything, they’re in a 10-year transitional period. Chelsea demand to win things.

'If you’re a player, you’d much rather move to Chelsea than Arsenal, there’s a better quality of player there and you’ve got more chance of winning things.'

Malmo players are not too disappointed: Rosler

Chelsea may be in control of the Europa League Round of 32 tie after our 2-1 win in the first leg in Sweden but Malmo manager Uwe Rosler was pleased with the performance of his players in their first competitive game for two months.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, the German felt his side gave a good account of themselves.

‘The mental strength and camaraderie that we showed was incredible. Getting a goal as reward was good ahead of the cup match this weekend and the return leg at Stamford Bridge next week,’ said Rosler, as reported by

‘The players are not too disappointed. They know that they played a good match against a good team.’

Merson backs Blues in FA Cup tie

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Chelsea will continue our recent dominance of Manchester United in the FA Cup when we meet the Red Devils in the fifth round on Monday.

The Blues have beaten United in our last four meetings in the competition including a 1-0 win in last year’s final at Wembley.

And with United reeling after Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League which saw key men Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial injured, Merson feels that Chelsea should prevail once again.

‘It’s one of those where I think Chelsea will win this. I think that Champions League loss will knock Manchester United sideways,’ said Merson.

’They will miss Jesse Lingard, he's a bit of an unsung hero for them. When he went off against PSG that was it then. The players that are coming in like Alexis Sanchez have flopped.

‘It's a massive game for both of them. Man Utd are now are under pressure after their first-leg loss to PSG in the Champions League. Their season could go up in flames in a week because if they get beat here they are out of the FA Cup and are facing an uphill task to stay in the Champions League.’
