With the help of club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton, we look at Chelsea's past cup encounters with today's opponents...
We Have History
Our sides have previously met in the final of a competition on only one occasion: the Full Members’ Cup in March 1986. Both teams had played away league matches 24 hours earlier – Chelsea 1-0 won at Southampton to stay fourth in the table, while City drew 2-2 at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby.
David Speedie and Colin Lee put Chelsea 5-1 up (despite an early opener for Billy McNeill’s men), but a late three-goal rally from the Citizens threatened a remarkable comeback. The Blues eventually held out for a 5-4 victory, which remains the highest scoring final in Wembley’s history.
Our only other encounters at the national stadium have been the 2012/13 FA Cup semi-final (pictured top) and this season’s Community Shield.
In the League Cup our paths have crossed only twice before. A Kerry Dixon hat-trick put the Blues on course for a 4-1 round-four victory at the Bridge in November 1984, but it is perhaps best remembered for a weakly-taken penalty by Pat Nevin.
(‘I hope I’m not being too unkind to Nevin, a player of undoubted quality,’ commented Barry Davies on the TV coverage, ‘but that has to be the worst penalty I have ever seen at this level of football.’ Apologies, Pat.)
City gained revenge in round three of the 1993/94 competition, the only goal of the game coming from their midfielder David White.
Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris, the man with most Chelsea appearances under his belt, made his debut aged 17 on 24 February 1962 in a 1-0 home win against Sheffield Wednesday. His final match was a 3-0 win against Oldham 18 years and 794 games later.
This will be the fourth occasion our clubs have met this season, following the 0-2 defeat in the Community Shield, the Blues’ 2-0 top-flight victory at the Bridge in December, and the 0-6 loss at the Etihad two weeks ago.
