David Luiz and Toni Rudiger – views on cup final game plan

Two of the Chelsea defenders who kept a clean sheet at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final but ultimately ended up on the losing side after penalties gave their verdicts on our performance against Manchester City.

For David Luiz there was the heartache of being, along with Jorginho, one of two Blues players who missed from the spot in the shoot-out. Man City were unsuccessful with just one, taken by Leroy Sane, so lifted the trophy. Despite the outcome, David Luiz saw aspects to admire in the way the afternoon panned out.

‘I think it was a great game, a special final for the fans, for everybody who was watching,’ he said.

‘Two great teams, great coaches, great players and in the end penalties are penalties, everybody knows that, sometimes the luck is not on your side.

‘I think we had a great plan, we played a good game. It is never easy to play against City, especially after the defeat like we had against them in the last game, so our team performance had personality, it was mature, intelligent to play in the moments we had to play and defend in the moments we had to defend. In the second half we were the better side than them but we did not score.

‘It was a typical cup final, both teams were trying to win the game and I think it was a great show.’

Toni Rudiger was a prominent figure at the back for Chelsea but unlike in last season’s FA Cup final when he was named man on of the match, he had to settle for a runners-up medal this time.

‘We sat back and waited to counter-attack,’ noted the German. ‘Defensively we did well. At the end of the day a penalty shoot-out is 50-50, and they won.

‘Against certain teams you have to sit back and wait. At City a couple of weeks ago we went attacking, attacking, attacking and we all know what happened.

‘Of course it’s disappointing to lose a final. We had only one chance, with N’Golo Kante. Defensively we did what we could and at the end of the day penalties is always 50-50.’

David Luiz does not see the display in this cup final as a one-off.

‘I think we have had some performances like that during the season, but we have to be more consistent,’ he pointed out.

‘Now we have a difficult game again on Wednesday against Tottenham so it is another opportunity for us to show we are good.’
