With the help of club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton, we look back on some past encounters with this weekend's opponents...
We Have History
This history of the fixture stretches back to a 3-0 Pensioners win in April 1908 in front of 40,000 at Hyde Road. Sunday will bring the 74th visit to the three grounds Manchester City have occupied.
Chelsea’s greatest margin of victory away to the Citizens is 4-1, achieved twice. In May 1933, the Pensioners had the ‘superlative’ Hugh Gallacher to thank for a hat-trick. ‘The Chelsea centre [forward] twice dribbled through the City defence,’ marvelled one newspaper, ‘tricked [goalkeeper Len] Langford, and placed the ball in the vacant goal.’
Four different scorers contributed to the second occurrence in October 1966: Bobby Tambling, Joe Kirkup, a 19-year-old Peter Osgood and Tommy Baldwin, who was making his debut. That win maintained the Blues’ leadership of Division One.
The last time we achieved the double over City was in 2016/17, and the achievement at the Etihad was a remarkable one. Antonio Conte’s eventual champions kept the hosts at bay until the last moments of the first half, when Gary Cahill diverted into his own net.
The response after the interval, not least from Cahill, was heroic. Regularly taken apart with pace and skill on the counter-attack, City saw three goals go in without replying, then had two players sent off at the death in a 3-1 Blues triumph. Relive the best moments here.
City have lost three of their past five Premier League matches against Chelsea (winning the other two), scoring four goals and never netting more than once in this run.
A selection of top Chelsea goals against Man City is below...
Chelsea trio John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo lifted the Africa Cup of Nations with three-time winners Nigeria on 10 February 2013. Mikel and Moses were in the Blues’ victorious Europa League final squad three months later.
In the reverse fixture to this weekend’s at Stamford Bridge on 8 December, Chelsea won 2-0 with N’Golo Kante’s emphatic finish on 45 minutes and a David Luiz header from a corner on 78.
Chelsea have won two of the past nine Premier League visits to the Etihad.
