There will surely have been plenty of children around the world receiving football boots as a Christmas present recently, but there can’t have been many that were as cheap as Kurt Zouma’s first-ever pair!

Our French defender has been speaking to the official Chelsea app, The 5th Stand, to discuss his first footballing memories including which legendary player was his idol growing up and the hilarious story of how he first joined a team.

‘My first boots were Kipsta and they cost maybe 10 euros,’ said Kurt. ‘After you kicked the ball once, they were ruined!

‘When I first played for a club when I was nine, my father bought me them. They were my first boots.

‘That was when I started playing and I remember when I went for a trial for a club in my town, and there were four teams.

‘The first team is the best and then second, third and fourth. They just looked at me and said ‘look, go to the fourth’ straightaway! But then after one or two weeks I ended up with the first team.’

You can read more from Kurt in this exclusive feature on our app, with the defender also explaining how he’s come to love his middle name after years of hating it!
