A week after adding an FA Cup goal to the one he scored in the Carabao Cup back in September, Callum Hudson-Odoi was once again celebrating at Stamford Bridge as he notched his maiden strike in the Premier League to seal a 3-0 victory over Burnley.
The teenager had earlier been involved in our second, combining neatly with Reece James on the right before Tammy Abraham’s bullet downward header hit the back of the net for 2-0.
That was a goal with the Chelsea Academy blueprint stamped all over it and it was Cobham graduate Hudson-Odoi who stole in at the back post to wrap up the points with 40 minutes of the contest still to play.
‘I’m delighted that I’ve finally got it,’ the 19-year-old said of the first league goal of his career, ‘and I’m delighted with the way the game went today.
‘The boys put in a massive effort and you could tell that by the way we were playing. We all had the enthusiasm, work-rate and mentality - we wanted to score goals, we wanted to keep a clean sheet, we wanted to work really hard and obviously I’m delighted we got the win.’

Hudson-Odoi and his team-mates have been stung by our recent home league form, which has seen three defeats in the past four at the hands of Southampton, Bournemouth and West Ham.
A continuation of that trend would jeopardise the top-four position we have held since mid-October, which made the visit of Burnley feel so pivotal to how the remainder of our season might pan out.
‘We never want to lose games, no matter what the game is, so when we do lose at home it’s a sad moment for us,’ explained Hudson-Odoi. ‘We don’t like losing because we’re a team that wants to win everything and win every game.
‘We wanted to start the home form again and make sure we’re winning games at home. The crowd are with us so we just have to keep winning and we’ll try to take that into the next game.’
With the score deadlocked at 0-0, Burnley had a goal ruled out for the most marginal of offside calls and the VAR also ensured a nervous wait for Hudson-Odoi’s first Premier League goal to be rubber-stamped. Abraham had attempted to flick Cesar Azpilicueta’s inswinging cross towards goal and, had the England striker made contact, it would have ruled Hudson-Odoi offside.
‘I was a bit wary about the offside but I thought to myself that if nobody touched it then it would definitely be a goal because I came from behind and I knew that,’ he said.
‘When I saw the VAR check, I was like ‘oh no’ but I’m just delighted it went my way and I got the goal, which I’m really happy for today.
‘They were playing really deep and compact so it was hard for us in the first 25 minutes to get on the ball and create stuff,’ Hudson-Odoi continued about the pattern of the game. ‘In the second half, we knew it would open up a bit more and we’d get more space so we started moving into pockets and we got the ball a lot.
‘We have to be more clinical, take our chances and score more goals. We could have scored more because we had so many chances but at the same time we are putting them away.’
Just like against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup last week, Hudson-Odoi developed a dangerous partnership with James down the right flank, providing a different dimension and weapon to the Chelsea attack.
‘I’ve always said Reece James is a great player and I like to play with him,’ added Callum. ‘We have great link-up. He likes to find you early, loves overlapping and getting crosses in so when we play with each other we always know what each other wants.
‘We try to push each other and get the best out of each other. He has great enthusiasm, a great mentality and he will go far definitely.’
