Spence opened the scoring against Championship outfit Charlton just before the break before youngster Emily Murphy doubled the advantage early in the second half.

Charlotte Fleming, another youngster who impressed in the FA Cup tie, was fouled in the box on the hour mark and Spence stepped up to net from the penalty spot before Murphy completed the scoring with just five minutes remaining.

Spence, who celebrated 10 years at the club last year, was involved the last time Chelsea Women played in the FA Cup final at Wembley back in 2018 and the midfielder is eager for another appearance at the national stadium.

‘You grow up wanting to play in the competition and wanting to play at Wembley,’ she said.

‘We’ve won this trophy and we’ve also lost this trophy so it’s important for us to get back to Wembley, especially after a devastating semi-final last year.

‘We want to get to Wembley every season. That is the target, we want to get to every final and we want to win every trophy. We are through to the next round and we are a step closer.’

Spence and her team-mates are now focused on advancing in another cup competition as they prepare for the semi-finals of the Continental Cup.

The Blues will travel to Manchester United tomorrow evening (Wednesday) looking to make it to the Continental Tyres League Cup final for the first time in the club’s history and Spence is expecting a tough test.

‘It’s important for us to start the game well but also finish it well too.

‘We’ve never been in the final before so I think it’s something we have all been focused on since pre-season and so it’s a massive game for us.

‘United are a young team, they’ve done well this season and the season previous too.

‘They also got to the semi-finals of this competition last season too so we expect it to be a tough game not only because it’s them, but because it is a semi-final.

‘It’s at their home ground but we will be prepared and focused to make sure that we make the final.'

Spence’s two goals against Charlton on Sunday now puts her second in the goal scoring charts at Chelsea this term, with the 27-year-old notching seven goals in all competitions. The midfielder is pleased about her performances, but takes more satisfaction from the success of the team.

‘I feel confident at the moment and obviously it always helps when you get goals. It’s been a long campaign but performances have been getting better and better over the course of the season.

‘I’m happy with myself but most importantly, I’m happy with how the team are playing at the moment. We are doing well and so it’s important to keep the winning momentum going.'
