The Data Day: Chelsea v Tottenham – Kovacic top dribbler and most accurate passer

We look at the key numbers from Saturday's win over Tottenham, with Mateo Kovacic the standout performer statistically speaking...

We had 17 shots to Tottenham’s five, with seven of ours on target.

Olivier Giroud and Ross Barkley had a joint-high four attempts each. The French striker was the only player to have more than one effort on target.

Giroud has been directly involved in 14 goals in his last 14 starts for Chelsea in all competitions, scoring 10 and assisting four. Entrusted.

He also won seven aerial duels, by some distance a game-high figure.

The possession was split, with the Blues having a 49.1 per cent share of the ball. From kick-off to Marcos Alonso’s goal we had 62 per cent possession.

Since he joined Chelsea in 2016, Marcos Alonso has more goals (17) and goal involvements (28 - 17 goals, 11 assists) than any other defender in the Premier League, with three of those goals coming against Spurs.

No player spent more time on the ball than Mateo Kovacic (6.6 per cent), with his midfield partner Jorginho next in that department (6.4 per cent).

The Italian international had the most touches (94), while it was Kovacic who was the most accurate passer on the pitch, finding a team-mate with 72 of his 77 passes. They were both game-high figures.

Kovacic and Jorginho were among a group of players who recorded two key passes. Ross Barkley, Reece James and Marcos Alonso also did so.

Overall our pass completion rate was 83 per cent, compared to Tottenham’s 82 per cent.

Kovacic was also our top dribbler, registering five successful take-ons out of five attempted.

When it came to tackles, Jorginho, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen won four each.

Azpilicueta and Jorginho topped the charts for interceptions with four apiece.
