WHEN AND WHERE?

Chelsea make the trip to the Midlands to face London rivals Arsenal at Nottingham Forest's City Ground. The final kicks off early Saturday evening at 5.30pm.

Forest have played their football at the famous stadium since 1898 but it will be the first time it has hosted the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup. The capacity is approximately 30,000.

MATCH TICKETS

Tickets for this final are still available to purchase online and on the gate on matchday.

They are priced at £10 for adults and £1 for concessions. Group pricing is also available for 15 supporters or more.

THE FORM

Emma Hayes’ side go into this final unbeaten this season, with two of our victories being against Arsenal in the league campaign.

However, our latest match was away to title rivals Manchester City last Sunday and the clash ended in an enthralling 3-3 draw.

Since the first ever WSL Cup – now known as the Continental Tyres League Cup – Arsenal have been finalists on eight out of a possible nine times. Our north London rivals have clinched the trophy on five occasions with the latest being in 2018 when they beat Manchester City 1-0. They failed to retain the cup last season when Manchester City triumphed 4-2 on penalties after the full-time result finished with a goalless draw.

The Blues progressed to this final after edging Manchester United 1-0 at Leigh Sports Village in January. It was Maren Mjelde who scored the match-winner when she curled her shot into the far corner in the closing stages of the match.

Arsenal were not in league action on Sunday due having to fulfil their fifth round Women’s FA Cup tie versus Lewes. The Gunners were victorious against the Championship side, but Lewes put up a good fight with the match only finishing 2-0 to Arsenal. Australian international Caitlin Foord scored on her debut, while Danielle van de Donk added the second to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Saturday’s opponents earned a spot in the Continental Cup final with a narrow 2-1 victory over Manchester City. Vivianne Miedema netted the first goal with a drilled effort into the bottom corner and their lead was doubled on the stroke of half-time when Van de Donk’s shot crept in under Roebuck in goal. However, Arsenal’s lead was halved when Gemma Bonner struck a half-volley from close range.

CHELSEA VS ARSENAL RECENT HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

Chelsea against Arsenal has always been a huge fixture in women’s top-flight football. Since the 2011 inaugural Women’s Super League season, the two sides have met over 25 times in all competitions. The Blues struggled against the Gunners for the first few years and it was not until July 2014 that we registered our first win. Yuki Ogimi and Ji So-Yun scored our two goals in a 2-1 victory at our old home Wheatsheaf Park.

As mentioned previously, we have registered two league victories against the Gunners this term beating them 2-1 at home and 4-1 away.

The first meeting took place at Kingsmeadow in October. Despite our dominance Arsenal found the net first when Van de Donk blasted past Berger. It was not until the second half that our hard work paid off and England levelled the scoring when she turned her player to steer her shot into the net after good work from Fran Kirby. Maria Thorisdottir and Ramona Bachmann, who both came on in the later stages of the match, proved to be super substitutes when Bachmann teed up her Norwegian team-mate who slammed a rocket of a shot into the top corner.

The reverse fixture which took place at the end of January was even more impressive against the WSL reigning champions. England got us underway inside 10 minutes with a curling effort and three minutes later Sam Kerr opened her Chelsea account with a powerful headed effort. Sophie Ingle made it three with a sensational strike before the clock even hit the 20-minute mark and Guro Reiten capped off our ruthless performance with a towering header in the second half. However, our clean sheet was not kept intact as substitute Beth Mead’s effort snuck past Berger.

We advanced to the last-eight of the 2019 Women’s FA Cup when England bagged a brace and Jonna Andersson scored her debut Chelsea goal. Just weeks before that impressive result, the Blues capped off another home win against the Gunners which ended 2-1 when Erin Cuthbert scored two brilliant goals either side of half-time.

However, one game in recent times we would like to forget was last season’s home league fixture which ended in a 5-0 thrashing from the Gunners.

One game which will not be forgotten for the right reasons was when we beat Arsenal 3-1 at Wembley Stadium to lift the 2018 FA Cup in front of more than 45,000 fans. Bachmann scored a brace while Kirby was on target that day, too.

It opens at 2.30pm and is located by the Brian Clough Stand car park. The fan zone includes various giveaways, including flags for both finalist teams. You might also meet Stamford and Bridget who you can take selfies with!

The area also offers up a wide range of food and drink items which cannot be found anywhere else in the stadium.

NEXT UP AT KINGSMEADOW

The Blues will not play at our KT1 home until Sunday 22 March due to this final, the international break and our Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie away to Everton. The next home match, which takes place on Mother’s Day, is against Everton in the league and the match kicks off at 2pm.
