It was always likely any slip-ups against a team like Bayern Munich in a competition like the Champions League would come at a cost, and Mason Mount acknowledged after Tuesday night’s result that the Chelsea team had fallen short when we allowed the Germans to take a 2-0 lead shortly after half-time.
The eventual 3-0 defeat meant there was a flat feeling at the end of Pancake Day at Stamford Bridge and although the last-16 tie has a second leg still to come, there is no getting away from the fact that our opponents are strong favourites to progress at our expense.‘It is always very tough to take after a loss, especially 3-0 and at home,’ said Mount who played the whole game, ‘but we have shown we can come back in the past and we need to gather ourselves together and we have it in the changing room to bring out the personalities and bounce back in the next game.‘I just think it was probably a lack of concentration,’ was his thought on the conceding of two goals in three minutes that handed Bayern the initiative.‘When you come out after half-time it is a moment when you can switch off and in the Champions League they [the opponents] take their chances. Any little mistake, any little lack of concentration you are going to get punished and that was kind of what happened in that little space of time.’
The second leg in Bavaria is in three weeks’ time with three Premier League matches and an FA Cup game to come first.‘We have to be positive, anything can happen,’ Mount said about the match in Germany. ‘We saw in the [2012] final between Chelsea and Bayern that anything can happen in football. 3-0, you never know, and we need to go there with our heads held high and try to perform to the best of our ability.’
