Although the season has been cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blues have had many stand-out games, including opening the league in front of a bumper crowd at Stamford Bridge and winning the Continental League Cup. Emma Hayes’ side were unbeaten throughout on the way to being awarded the title.We begin by recalling our first game of 2019/20…

A dream start for the Blues

We kicked off the season against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge in front of a record crowd for a Chelsea Women’s home match, led out by newly-appointed captain Magdalena Eriksson. Bethany England struck wonderfully with less than five minutes on the clock to ensure we had a perfect start to our campaign.

City curse lifted courtesy of late comeback

The Blues came from behind to edge what was a tight game against rivals Manchester City in December. Although we dominated for large periods of the game, City scored the opener against the run of play but an England goal and a fantastic Maren Mjelde winner ensured we beat our big rivals in a WSL game for the first time since 2014.

Thorisdottir’s significant strike against Arsenal

Chelsea once again were losing in a mouth-watering London derby with the Gunners but ended up winning 2-1. It was not until the second half that our hard work paid off and it was England who came up trumps, before Maria Thorisdottir proved to be a super substitute when she slammed her shot into the top corner in the closing stages of the contest.

Spot-kick seals important victory

A capacity Kingsmeadow crowd saw Chelsea beat Manchester United courtesy of Mjelde's penalty in the first-ever meeting between the sides. After the Norwegian’s cool spot-kick, Ann-Katrin Berger produced a world-class save to deny Ella Toone and preserve our lead and ensure the victory in what was a tense encounter with the Red Devils.

An Honourable milestone for Hayes

The Blues marked Emma Hayes’ 200th game in charge of Chelsea Women in some style, as a brace apiece from Ji So-Yun and England helped us to a thumping 5-1 win over Bristol City in December.

London derby stunner

The Blues produced an attacking masterclass away to our London neighbours Arsenal and ran out 4-1 winners in January. England opened the scoring with another spectacular strike after 10 minutes and the second followed three minutes later when new signing Sam Kerr headed home to open her Chelsea account. Before the clock had even ticked past the 20-minute mark, Sophie Ingle unleashed a left-footed half-volley into the top corner to make it 3-0. Guro Reiten sealed a brilliant performance by adding the fourth!

West Ham hammering

Chelsea’s largest victory of the season came against West Ham when we thumped them 8-0 in front of more than 3000 supporters at Kingsmeadow. Mjelde and England netted two apiece while Ingle, Erin Cuthbert, Ramona Bachmann and Academy player Emily Murphy also contributed in front of goal. A fantastic display from Hayes’ in-form side.

Berger’s brilliant save in City clash

Berger made a super second-half penalty save against Man City, which proved to be vital as we took a share of the points in a six-goal thriller that could have gone either way. It was an end-to-end encounter with the Blues twice falling behind, before taking the lead through Bethany England in the 74th minute only to be pegged back by Lauren Hemp two minutes later with the match ending 3-3.

Appearance milestones

This campaign brought memorable milestones for three Blues as Ji So-Yun and Hannah Blundell reached 150 appearances for the club, while Fran Kirby made 100. Ji celebrated her 150th game against Aston Villa, Blundell’s was at home to West Ham and Kirby’s 100th was away to the Hammers.

History made

The Blues clinched the Continental League Cup for the first time in our history, as two goals from top goalscorer England, the second of which came deep into stoppage time, secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Gunners.
