Our all-time top goalscorer took over the Blues last summer with a transfer ban in place and four-time Chelsea Player of the Year winner Eden Hazard heading off to pastures new.

He moved quickly to promote a number of Academy graduates into the senior squad, some of whom were fresh from Championship loans. Lampard had watched the development of two, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori, at close quarters having benefited from their quality during his season in charge of Derby County.

Tammy Abraham was handed the no.9 shirt and finished the season as our topscorer with 17 goals in all competitions, while Reece James emerged as another super talent following his recovery from injury. Lampard also nurtured the progress of Billy Gilmour as he adapted to men’s football with a couple of standout performances.

Lampard displayed tactical flexibility throughout the campaign, moving between 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3 formations. A shift to three at the back proved particularly effective away to Wolves and then again at Tottenham before Christmas, that 2-0 win in our first game at their new stadium perhaps the highlight of our league campaign.

We also won away at Arsenal, and at home to Tottenham and Man City, before sealing fourth place with victory over Wolves on the final day, Mount crowning a fine first season with an inch-perfect free-kick that set us on our way.

Lampard was twice nominated for Manager of the Month, winning the award for a flawless October in which we first moved up to fourth place, a position we would never relinquish.

Only beaten on penalties in the Super Cup, we qualified from a tough Champions League group and also reached the FA Cup final, beating Liverpool, Leicester and Manchester United along the way.
