On Loan

First loan for young goalkeeper

Jamie Cumming will join League Two side Stevenage on loan for the duration of the 2020/21 season.

The goalkeeper, 20, will be getting his first taste of senior football after acting as understudy to Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero last term.

Cumming has been a Chelsea player since the age of eight, always deployed between the sticks during his rise through the ranks at Cobham.

He kept goal in successive FA Youth Cup triumphs in 2017 and 2018, playing in all but one of our eight ties in the latter campaign, and caught the eye in the 2018 UEFA Youth League semi-finals with a heroic penalty shoot-out performance against Porto.

His senior experience so far has been limited to action in the EFL Trophy, where he debuted at the age of 17 three years ago and has played 11 times in total. After signing a new four-year contract last summer, the England Under-17 international was confirmed as Frank Lampard’s third-choice goalkeeper and has trained all season with the senior side, featuring on the bench on numerous occasions.

The Winchester-born shot-stopper joins a Stevenage side reprieved from relegation last season due to Bury’s expulsion and Macclesfield’s hefty points deduction. The EFL season is due to begin on the weekend of 12 September following the curtailment of the 2019/20 campaign back in April.
