Thiago Silva – his numbers

A long and distinguished career playing for a famous football nation and sweeping up domestic honours at club level inevitably leads to some big stats – and we have collected a few of them here.

Thiago Silva joined Chelsea earlier today having previously played for Paris St-Germain and AC Milan among others, and represented Brazil for approaching 100 times.

For Chelsea fans who have watched from afar, it is those appearances in the famous yellow and green shirt of his nation, and his PSG outings, not least in the many Champions League games against us (and last weekend’s final in Lisbon) which have most caught the eye, and it is figures from those we focus on here.

Thiago Silva PSG stats

Eye-catching, especially if you want defenders in your team who can play out from the back, is that for centre-backs who performed in Europe’s ‘Big Five’ leagues with at least a 1000 minutes play in 2019/20, Thiago Silva was first for overall pass accuracy - with a 96 per cent completion figure.

That number comes from a high number of passes attempted. His average of 86 per Ligue 1 game last season puts him sixth in the same group of big-league central defenders. Twenty-eight of those were forward passes which is a top-10 figure.

When it comes to ball touches Thiago Silva was seventh in the ranking with 96 per game.

Looking at the defensive side, in Ligue 1 last season the PSG skipper conceded an average of 0.63 goals for every 90 minutes he was in action and with 12 clean sheets in 21 matches, no one in France had better than that 56 per cent clean-sheet ratio.

Thiago Silva Champions League stats

One game from his PSG season just completed was the showpiece occasion however – the Champions League final – and although his side lost narrowly to Bayern Munich – it was still a mightily impressive campaign in that competition as he led the French side to their first final in it.

Here are Thiago Silva’s stats for the 2019/20 Champions League.

During his eight years in the French capital, which yielded 23 trophies, his 315 appearances places him sixth in the PSG’s all-time list.

Of those games, 204 were in the league and PSG won 73.5 per cent those. They were victorious in 66.3 per cent when he was not in the side during that time.

Over that same eight-year period, Thiago Silva was top in Europe when it came to pass completion (93.7 per cent) and in winning duels, only Virgil van Dijk performed better (73.4 per cent versus 71.7 per cent).

Thiago Silva Brazil stats

On the international stage, the 35-year-old has won 89 caps for Brazil.

With a won 60, drawn, 19, lost 10 record (goals for 185, goals against 52) that is a 78 per cent win ratio on the international stage.
