In the first of our series looking at breakthrough seasons for some of the emerging young talents in our squad, we recall a massive year for Mason Mount.

The 21-year-old midfielder had played under Frank Lampard on loan at Derby last season, and our head coach showed the same trust in Mount at Stamford Bridge as he had at Pride Park.

That faith was repaid right from the start, as Mount scored the first goal of the Lampard era on his home debut, and his habit of making clever runs to find the back of the net frequently drew comparisons with his boss’ own playing career.

So quick was Mount’s transition to life in the Premier League, he was one of the first names on the team sheet throughout 2019/20, adding technical ability and creativity to a high work-rate in leading the Chelsea press, while posing a significant threat from set-pieces.

His performances with Chelsea made him a regular in the England team and he continued to go from strength to strength, finishing the domestic season in great form. As well as playing an important role in us reaching the FA Cup final, Mount put in an inspired performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League match that secured our place in next term’s Champions League, scoring one and setting up the other in a 2-0 victory.

You can watch an in-depth look at Mount’s breakthrough 2019/20 campaign above and test your knowledge of the midfielder’s season with the quiz below. Keep your eye out for more in the Breakthrough Season series looking at Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic and Reece James over the course of this week.
