Next up in our series looking at breakthrough seasons for the young talents who emerged at Chelsea in 2019/20, we highlight top scorer Tammy Abraham’s campaign.

It was clear Frank Lampard trusted Abraham to lead the line right from the start, when the striker was handed our number nine shirt and given the nod for our first game of the season at Manchester United.

He may not have found the net in that match, but he was soon off to a blistering start. That was underlined when he scored in three consecutive appearances in late August and early September to go top of the Premier League goals chart, picking up where he left off on loan in the Championship the previous season and in the Chelsea Academy before that. He soon added his first international goal for England.

Abraham rapidly took to his first season in the Champions League too, scoring three times in that competition, all of them our first goal of the match. They contributed to his total of 18 goals in 2019/20, more than any other Chelsea player.

Injury slowed his progress either side of football’s suspension during the Covid-19 pandemic. When sport returned with a grueling schedule he was sharing the striker role with Olivier Giroud, but still made some telling contributions, most notably bagging the decisive goal at Crystal Palace just six minutes after coming off the bench, giving us a crucial 3-2 win in the race for a top-four finish.
