Yesterday Chelsea FC Women confirmed the signing of one of Europe’s top footballers Pernille Harder on a three-year contract. Blues boss Emma Hayes has shared her delight in signing the Denmark star and revealed what she will bring to the team.

The 27-year-old, who is a proven goalscorer at the highest level, makes the move to London from Wolfsburg after helping the Bundesliga Frauen side win four consecutive German league and cup doubles since joining them in 2017.

Not only has she the knack in front of goal, twice finishing as top scorer in the German league, the Danish captain has so much more to offer and Hayes gives us an insight into what Chelsea fans can expect from our new addition.

‘One of her biggest attributes is her movement,’ Hayes said. ‘She knows when to create space for others. Her decision-making in the final third and the timing of her runs into the box is exceptional.

‘Her finishing and nose for goal is proven on the world stage for a number of years. She knows where the back of the net is. But it is her work for the team, what she will do for the team, that stands out for me.

‘She wants to make sure she contributes to the team’s goals. She knows she has joined a fantastic team and she just wants to help us meet our objectives.

‘She’s known to be a good organiser on the pitch. I think she’ll be a leader from the front.’

With a number of attacking options at Hayes’ disposal, the Chelsea boss has confirmed that we can expect to see Harder utilised in various different positions throughout the season, while expressing her hopes for a successful trophy-laden campaign.

‘She gives us options in a variety of attacking positions, as she’s so versatile. Anywhere across the frontline, anywhere in an attacking-midfield role – she’s versatile.

‘The signing is another great moment for us that validates how much our club supports us. I hope to bring more joy to the football club with more trophies in the years to come.

‘I said last year that this is the best league in the world, and the signings this year confirm that this is the place to be, where all the top players want to be. It’s great for everyone involved.’

The Blues begin our Women's Super League title defence away to Manchester United on Sunday. The match, which is being played behind closed doors, kicks off at 2.30pm and is being shown live on BT Sport.
