With Jorginho maintaining his fine record as a penalty-taker for Chelsea in our season-opening victory at Brighton on Monday, we take a look at the spot-kick record of the Italian and some other players who have been largely accurate from 12 yards for the Blues.

Michael Ballack

While Ballack had a superb record in penalties during his career, putting away 29 of his 31 attempts for his clubs and Germany, the midfielder rarely got the opportunity to take them for Chelsea due to Frank Lampard’s fine form for the Blues and England.

However, he didn’t make any mistake on the three occasions when he was called upon to take penalties for Chelsea with his most memorable strike securing a 2-1 win over Manchester United late in the 2007/08 Premier League season.

Eidur Gudjohnsen

The Icelandic forward was coolness personified from the penalty spot as he converted all four spot-kicks entrusted to him during his time at Stamford Bridge from 2000 to 2006.

The most notable of Gudjohnsen’s penalties came during our Premier League-winning campaign in 2004/05 when he sealed his only hat-trick for the Blues in a 4-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

Willian

Willian may not have had too many penalty opportunities during his Chelsea career because of the presence of Eden Hazard but he was brilliant from 12 yards, tucking away all seven of his opportunities for the club.

The Brazilian even made a bit of history last season when he found the net against Manchester City, West Ham United and Watford to become the first Chelsea player to score penalties in three consecutive Premier League games.

Jorginho

Since scoring on his Chelsea debut against Huddersfield in August 2018, Jorginho has been accurate with penalties for the Blues with his strike at Brighton improving his record to eight-for-eight from spot-kicks, exluding his shoot-out miss versus Man City in the Carabao Cup final.

The most notable of his conversions came in the Champions League thriller against Ajax last season when he twice beat Andre Onana from 12 yards in a memorable 4-4 draw against the Dutch champions.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Jorginho is closing in on the club record held by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who was perfect with all 12 penalties he took for Chelsea from 2000 to 2004.

The Dutch striker didn’t need much of a run-up but he packed so much power in his shot that goalkeepers rarely stood a chance when he was on spot-kick duty.

Ironically, the only penalty he missed during his prolific career came against the Blues. Ed de Goey denied him from the spot when he played for Leeds United during a 0-0 draw in the 1998/99 season.

Almost perfect

Didier Drogba nearly made it onto the perfect list but a miss against Tottenham Hotspur in a 1-1 draw in December 2010 meant he finished his Chelsea career with a record of six goals in seven attempts.

Cesc Fabregas also just missed out on penalty perfection for the Blues, finishing with a record of four in five after he had his attempt saved by Nottingham Forest’s Luke Steele in his final game for Chelsea in an FA Cup tie in January 2019.

And while they regularly scored from the spot, the sheer volume of penalties taken by Eden Hazard and Frank Lampard made it difficult for them to boast perfect records. Still, they did pretty well for the Blues with Lampard scoring on 49 of 58 attempts (84.4 per cent) and Hazard putting away 26 of 31 (83.8 per cent) opportunities at the first attempt.
