Barnsley’s best season in the League Cup was in the 1981/82 season when they reached the quarter-finals for the first and only time, losing to Liverpool after a replay.

Barnsley are spending their 16th season in the Championship since they were relegated from the Premier League in 1998. They also dropped down to League One three times in that period.

Two stoppage-time winners in their last two games last season against Nottingham Forest and Brentford ensured Barnsley avoided relegation and secured a second successive season in the Championship.

Barnsley have lost both league games this term without scoring a goal, the most recent 0-2 at Reading on Saturday after having a player sent off in each half.

This is the first time The Tykes have reached this stage of the League Cup since 2017/18 when Tottenham defeated them 1-0 at Wembley.

Barnsley last reached the fourth round in 2009/10 when they lost 2-0 at home to Man Utd.

Discipline

Andreas Christensen and Barnsley’s Michal Helik and Mads Anderson are suspended following their red cards at the weekend.

Yellow cards only count in the competition they are received. In the Carabao Cup, two yellow cards will result in a one-match suspension. The cut-off point is the quarter-finals, so no player can miss the final through cumulative yellows.

Referee

Darren Bond refereed two Barnsley Championship games last season and in their game at West Brom he issued 11 yellow cards. This is his first Chelsea appointment.
