George McEachran has today completed a season-long loan move to MVV Maastricht in the Netherlands.
It means a return to the Dutch second tier for the 20-year-old midfielder. Earlier this year he spent time on loan at SC Cambuur, making a couple of substitute appearances before the season was terminated due to the global pandemic.
McEachran has been part of the Chelsea Academy since the age of eight, winning the FA Youth Cup in 2017 and 2018. The following season he occasionally trained with Maurizio Sarri’s squad, and was on the bench for our Europa League group game at home to MOL Vidi. He was also a member of the travelling party to Baku for the final.
An England Under-17 World Cup winner, McEachran will now continue his development at MVV, who lie ninth in the Eerste Divisie table after six games. They host Go Ahead Eagles on Saturday.
Another Chelsea Academy player, Charlie Brown, is returning from his loan in Belgium. The striker was at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise where he also spent the second half of last season.
Two others from the Academy have departed after their main contracts came to an end in the summer. They were on short-term contracts after that.
Marcel Lavinier leaves after 12 years spent in our youth development ranks. He joins Tottenham. Part of the Under-18 team which collected a clean sweep of four trophies in the 2017/18 season, the versatile defender made 10 appearances for the development squad side who lifted the Premier League 2 trophy earlier this year.
Jordan Aina joined the Academy as an Under-9 after progressing through our development centre programme. Another versatile defender, Aina made 14 appearances for the youth team in his first full-time season helping form one of the best defences in the league that term. He moves to Fulham.
We thank both players for their contribution and wish them well.
