Chelsea pair Timo Werner and Kai Havertz both found the net for Germany in an entertaining match on Tuesday night which also featured Toni Rudiger, although they could not secure three points against neighbours Switzerland.

The match was a UEFA Nations League encounter held in Cologne and it ended 3-3. Switzerland were ahead in less than five minutes, Mario Gavranovic heading in from an angle after a corner was not cleared and it got worse for the home side when Remo Freuler chipped in from a good attack before the half-hour was up. Rudiger also had to come to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer’s rescue after he gave away a good chance. However within two minutes of the Swiss making it 2-0, Werner began the German recovery with a goal that was all about precision rather than power. Havertz had won the ball midway inside the Swiss half and his Chelsea team-mate took possession and advanced to the left of the penalty area before rolling a shot across the defence and goalkeeper and just inside the far post.Havertz hit the post early in the second half from a chance all of his own making with a determined burst that shrugged off a defender but he succeeded in equalising on 55 minutes. Picking up the ball after a mistake, he advanced and finished expertly from a tight angle with his right foot.

The see-saw game continued when Switzerland restored their lead just two minutes later, Gavranovic with his second after the Germans made a meal of clearing their lines but it was soon 3-3 and Chelsea men were involved again. Havertz played the ball forward to Werner who beat his marker out wide and supplied Serge Gnabry for the goal.At that stage with half-an-hour to play, more goals seemed inevitable but it proved not the case. Havertz came off 15 minutes from the end and the Swiss had a man sent off in the dying minutes.Elsewhere in the same group, Kepa was again an unused sub for Spain who selected David De Gea in goal and were defeated 1-0 away to Ukraine. They top their group by one point from Germany and Ukraine with four games played.Having made his comeback from injury with a substitute appearance on Friday, Hakim Ziyech was not involved in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo in Tuesday’s friendly.Moving down the age groups, England Under-21s qualified for next year’s European Championships with two games to play thanks to three points secured against Turkey at Molinuex.Marc Guehi was part of the defence that was heading for a clean sheet until their opponents scored in the 92nd minute while Callum Hudson-Odoi, playing with a bandaged head, was in a lively England attack that was restricted to a one-goal lead for most of the game, given to them by a first-half own-goal.

There was good fortune for Aidy Boothroyd’s side when Turkey failed to convert a penalty given away by some sloppy play early in the second half but then the Young Lions missed one of their own.Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah was the culprit but he made amends on 89 minutes and shortly after Hudson-Odoi had come off when he scored England’s second, becoming the U21s’ all-time topscorer. The Turkey goal ensured a few anxious seconds at the end but the game ended 2-1.At Under-20 level, Henry Lawrence started for England in that team’s first game of the season and he ended up on the victorious side. Wales were the side defeated 2-0 at St George’s Park with both goals coming in the first half, scored by Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey and Xavier Amaechi of Hamburg.
