Chelsea have never met Sevilla in European competition. They will be the 54th different side we have met in the Champions League and the fifth from Spain.

The clubs have previously played in two friendlies in the seventies, the most recent in August 1978 at Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium in front of a 40,000 crowd.

This is our 29th season in European competition and 17th in the Champions League.

We have won our Champions League group 11 times, although we finished runners-up in the last two, in 2017/18 and 2019/20.

Chelsea's last four Champions League campaigns have ended in the round of 16. In 2019/20 we were beaten by the eventual champions Bayern Munich. The defeat in Munich in the second leg ended our club record 10-match unbeaten away run in Europe.

The 2-1 victory at Atletico Madrid on matchday two in 2017/18 is our only success in our last 10 fixtures against La Liga clubs, home and away (five draws, four defeats).

Tuesday evening will be the 14th occasion of 17 and 13th of the last 14 that our opening Champions League fixture has been at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are hoping to avoid three consecutive defeats in Europe for the first time.

The Blues have only lost the first match in a Champions League campaign twice in our 16 previous seasons in the competition (winning 10) – Basel in 2013/14 and Valencia last season.

That Valencia defeat is the only one in our past 14 Champions League group games at Stamford Bridge (winning nine).

Timo Werner has been directly involved in nine goals in his last 11 Champions League appearances, all for RB Leipzig between November 2017 and March 2020 (seven goals, two assists).

Werner is hoping to become the third German player to score for Chelsea in the Champions League, after Michael Ballack (four goals) and Andre Schurrle (two).

This is Sevilla's sixth Champions League group stage campaign, and first since 2017/18, when they reached the quarter-finals. They have qualified for the knockout round in all but one of the previous five attempts. They haven’t lost on matchday one since 2007/08, when they were beaten 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium by Arsenal.

Last season, Julen Lopetegui's side won the Europa League/UEFA Cup for a record sixth time, all of them since 2006.

Last season's wins against Wolves and Manchester United made it three successive victories against Premier League opponents for Sevilla, who have lost only one of their last nine games against English clubs (five wins, three draws).

Sevilla have coped less well against English opposition in the Champions League group stage, winning one of their six matches.

They have won one of their seven away major European matches in England (three draws, three defeats), a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in March 2018. All seven of their away games have been against different teams – Bolton, Tottenham, Arsenal, Man City, Leicester, Liverpool and Man Utd.

Sevilla lost on Saturday for the first time in La Liga in 19 matches since Celta Vigo beat them on 9 February. It was their second defeat of the season in all competitions after losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich in the Super Cup in Budapest.
