The form

Chelsea are undefeated in the Women’s Super League so far this term and have won both of our group stage fixtures of the Continental League Cup, after defeating Arsenal 4-1 and Tottenham Hotspur 2-0.

The Blues’ most recent match resulted in a 1-1 draw with London rivals Arsenal in the WSL on Sunday. It was a frantic end to this derby with the Gunners’ Beth Mead breaking the deadlock with four minutes left of normal time to play when she poked home a low cross from fellow striker Vivianne Miedema. It was looking to be a first league defeat for the Blues in 26 games until Pernille Harder’s swooping cross bounced off defender Lotte Wubben-Moy and looped into the back of the net in the 90th minute.

We were last in Conti Cup action two weeks ago when we welcomed Tottenham Hotspur to Kingsmeadow. Erin Cuthbert opened the scoring in the 70th minute against a well-drilled Spurs side when she struck from 25 yards out, and German midfielder Melanie Leupolz doubled our advantage when she converted from the spot following a handball in the box.

Our opponents London City Lionesses are currently placed eighth in the Championship having won two, drawn one and lost four. Their league game against Charlton Athletic on Sunday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, which means that they have not been in action for two weeks. The Lionesses’ last game was against Arsenal in the Conti Cup where they were defeated 4-0 with Vivianne Miedema scoring all four goals for the Gunners. Melissa Phillips’ side also lost 4-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup back in October.

Chelsea v London City Lionesses head-to-head record

Chelsea have come up against London City Lionesses (formerly known as Millwall Lionesses) twice in the Women’s Super League era, with both games coming in this competition.

The last time we met was in August 2015 and the Blues ran out 6-0 winners. Emma Hayes’ side were bright from the start and stormed into a commanding lead with two goals in three minutes courtesy of Ji So-Yun and former Blue Laura Coombs. The latter could have extended the advantage seconds before half-time but placed her penalty kick wide. Chelsea continued to control proceedings and added to our tally late in the game with four goals in 12 minutes. Fran Kirby netted an impressive 10-minute hat-trick and Coombs netted from the spot to give the scoreline a more reflective, emphatic look.

Prior to that, we played tonight’s opponent in May 2014 and we came away with a convincing 4-0 victory. Chelsea’s all-time top scorer, Eniola Aluko, opened the scoring before Jodie Brett stretched the home team's lead just before the break, with the visitors limited to a couple of half chances. But a second-half brace from substitute Rosella Ayane – who now plays her football at Spurs – sealed a routine win.
