Following the passing of Diego Maradona yesterday, we look back at the day the football icon visited our Cobham training centre in 2008.

Chelsea Football Club was saddened to learn yesterday that Maradona had died aged 60. The Argentinian was a true footballing legend, regarded as one of the greatest players – if not the best – of all time and lifted the 1986 World Cup as captain of his country.

Back in 2008, Maradona was a visitor to our Cobham training centre, where he spoke with the Chelsea players and posed for photographs.

Andriy Shevchenko, a Ballon d’Or winner in 2004, spoke so well of Diego during that visit 12 years ago and his words feel right to share again today.

'In the world of football he is a hero for every player, he is an incredible player,' said the Ukrainian in 2008.

'He is a legend, a hero for everyone, and a fantastic player.’
