The Debrief: Animated video explains Kovacic’s impact and analyses our threat down the right

Our analysis of the statistics from yesterday’s stalemate with Tottenham includes for the first time an animated video, which brings to life the good work done by Mateo Kovacic, Reece James and Hakim Ziyech in the Chelsea team…

Watch our new animated Debrief video to see how man-of-the-match Mateo Kovacic, Hakim Ziyech and Reece James worked together to threaten Tottenham down our right-hand side.

No budging at the back

It was another superb defensive showing from the Blues on Sunday. We limited Tottenham to just one attempt on target, and that was struck from outside the box.

They did not have a single shot in the second half, with all five of their efforts coming before the break. Just two of those were struck inside the 18-yard box, and three came from set-plays.

We won 13 tackles to Tottenham’s five, testament to our ability to counter their counter-attacks. Our midfield trio of N’Golo Kante, Kovacic and Mason Mount won eight challenges between them, with each of the back four successful with at least one.

We had 13 attempts of our own, of which three were on target, three blocked and nine from inside the box. None were deemed big chances.

Tammy Abraham had four attempts, twice as many as anyone else.

Other statistical highlights

We were accurate with 89 per cent (587/657) of our passes. Reece James with a 96 per cent completion rate was marginally more accurate than Thiago Silva and Kovacic (both 95 per cent).

James and Kante played three key passes each.

Abraham was dominant in the air, winning five aerial duels, two more than anyone else.

By the time of the next league meeting between Chelsea and Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, we will have lost once to them at home in 30 years.
