When did the January transfer window open?

Clubs could officially do business again in England from Saturday 2 January. This applied to those in the Premier League and English Football League.

What about other countries?

The transfer windows in Germany and France also opened on 2 January, while clubs in Spain and Italy began trading from Monday 4 January.

Which players can move clubs?

All permanent and loan transfers could be completed throughout the month of January and today (1 February). Players can also be recalled from existing loans, depending on the terms of the deal, and retained in the squad or complete another temporary or permanent transfer.

Will there be an extended period for domestic-only transfers again?

No. English clubs did agree an 11-day extension to the summer window for deals between Premier League and EFL clubs but no similar agreement is in place for the winter window.

What about Brexit?

The UK’s withdrawal from the European Union does have an impact on the football trading market, since the transition period ended at the start of 2021 as European citizens, like those from elsewhere in the world, need a visa to work in the country.

However, at Premier League level, it is expected to have a negligible effect due to the new Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) awarded by the FA. This is a points-based system that reflects where an individual has played previously, for how long and at what level. Essentially, if a player is aged 21 or older from a country ranked in FIFA’s top 50 and has played 70 per cent of international matches over the previous two years, the transfer will be endorsed.

Clubs will now not be able to sign players from overseas until they are 18. Signing players under the age of 21 is restricted to a maximum of three in this transfer window and six per season thereafter.

When do Premier League clubs have to submit updated squad lists?

Early February, once the winter window has closed. Premier League clubs will once again have to register 25 over-21 first team players, of whom a minimum of eight should be homegrown.

Those in European competition will also have to resubmit squad lists before the knockout rounds begin later in February, so there is the opportunity to add new signings to the roster.

When does the transfer window close?

As the final day of the month fell on a Sunday, the deadline for transfers across Europe will be on Monday 1 February at 11pm.

Portugal is allowing a couple of extra days up to Thursday 4 February, while the deadline in Russia and China is later in the month.

Who have moved from Chelsea during this transfer window?

Charlie Brown has joined MK Dons, Juan Castillo has moved to Den Haag on loan, Danny Drinkwater has joined Turkish club Kasimpasa on loan, Lucas Piazon has moved permanently to Braga, Fikayo Tomori is now on loan at AC Milan and Baha Rahman has been loaned to PAOK in Greece.
